Hi, I'm Alice! I was Kit Sec last year and now I'm out in America for 8 weeks, for a second summer as a camp counsellor at Camp Kern, Ohio.
Camp Kern is an overnight camp for 5- 16 year olds, with equestrian programs for children of all riding abilities. So far, I've been doing everything from teaching 7 year olds to groom, tack and trot for the first time to leading an advanced group in jumping and horsey first aid. We even got the chance to go to Kentucky Horse Park to visit the state's mounted police and look round the grounds that host the Kentucky Derby and 3 Day Eventing. The barn has around 50 horses, with a couple of mules thrown in too- imagine trying to get all the herd fed at 6am, not easy!! Luckily so far this summer, we haven't had any major incidents, just a few trodden toes and some sunburnt ponies but taking picnic trail rides definitely cancel out all the bad. Hope everyone's having an amazing summer, can't wait to come visit the UMEC family soon!
